The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
