The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in September and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of his transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
