Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to question specific calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
